Hey everyone, I have a quick question regarding trading stocks on margin which I hope you can help me with. So I understand that for most brokerages, you need a 50% initial margi. Requirement to use margin. My question is if that 50% need to be in the stock that you wish to buy on margin or not. For example, if I wanted to buy $10,000 worth of Amazon stock, my initial margin req would be $5000. Does this $5000 need to be in Amazon stock in the form of shares, or can It just be sitting in my account as cash? Also, does using margin only activate when you want to make a purchase whose value is greater than the amount of cash you have available? Or can you choose when to use margin? Thanks.

Rough estimation on IB costs and margins for trading stocks?
I'm working on creating my own strategy, going well. However, I find it difficult to find out the two following things: - What's the cost of opening a long or short position on a stock on the S&P 500, approximately? - Same for CFD trading costs - And what are the margin requirements when shorting? I'm using 150% as ballpark figure, so if I trade 1,000 EUR of stock, I deduct 1,500 EUR from investable budget I would like to have some ball park figures to be able to further test the profitability of my strategy. Exact numbers are not required. Thanks!
